Sameba or the Holy Trinity Cathedral – Tbilisi Georgia
The Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi or Sameba Cathedral is the main cathedral of Georgian Orthodox church. It is the third tallest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in the world. It is also has the largest total area for religious buildings in the world. It’s design is a composition of traditional Georgian architecture and parts of history and has some Byzantine undertones. It was constructed in 1995 and completed in 2004.
It is erected at the hill of Elia in the historic district of Avlabari in Old town Tbilisi. Its location is just a walking distance from the Presidential palace. Its elevation accessed through a wide and imposing staircase. This is the biggest symbol of the Georgian Orthodox church’s of post-Soviet revival towers.
The cathedral was designed by Archil Mindiashvili and the building was paid mostly by donations. Like most of other churches the cathedral has a cruciform plan view with a dome resting over the eight columns. It also consist of nine chapels and said that natural materials are used during constructions.
