Nakhchivan City

– is the capital of the eponymous Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. Located at 450 km (280 mi) west of Baku. After visiting Alinja fortress, my guide Natig brought me to Nakhchivan city and had our lunch there.

NAKHCHIVAN CITY’S POPULAR LANDMARKS ARE:

1. YESIDABAD CASTLE

– was named after Yazdgerd III, the last king of the Sassanid Empire. This is a reconstruction from pre-medieval castle. One of the largest tourist site destination in Nakhchivan.

This castle consists of a large spacious garden square with a museum in the middle (photos below), it is surrounded by a large wall that you can walk at the top along the walls as well.

2. NOAH’S MAUSOLEUM or the TOMB OF PROPHET NOAH

– was built in 2006. This consists of the remains from the former temple (which constructed back in 8th century) that can be found at the lower storey of the mausoleum. Some sources mentioned that according to Armenian tradition and from the 19th Century Russia and Europe, Noah’s tomb is located in Nakhchivan and the locals here considered it a holy place. This is only a 2 minutes walk from Yesidabad Castle about 140 meters.

3. PALACE OF NAKHCHIVAN KHANS (previously the Museum of Carpets)

– located at the north from Yesidabad Castle. The palace was built in a beautiful 18th Century Nakhchivan-Maragha architectural school surrounded by beautiful gardens too.

4. MOMINE KHATUN MAUSOLEUM

– is a UNESCO World Heritage site located at Nakhchivan city. It is only a 5 minutes walk from Palace of Nakhchivan Khans of about 350 meters. It is one of the most important landmarks in the city.
